Re: Woody Herman late Herd lead players

I guess the confusion about the "last Lead player" is that I was on the band when Woody was still alive but not on the tour. Woody was getting better, and few times wanted, and was going to get back...

I too saw the Herman band in 1987 in Oakland when word had not gotten out that he was sick and and would not be there. Eric was there however and sounded great!

Someone asked who preceded Roger, and I think it was Don Downs, who was on around 84-85. I think Byron Stripling was also on in 84 before him. Downs wasn't on any albums, but he did appear on a PBS...

Re: Woody Herman late Herd lead players

My mistake! I've been talking about the Guy Lombardo band all along! (wrong final lead trumpet, wrong lead trumpet from when I did see them, wrong bari sax) So then I realized, it was the Guy Lombardo...

Re: Woody Herman late Herd lead players

I could have my dates skewed but I think it was Dan Fornero who preceded Roger on the Herman band. According to his bio, he was on the band for a year sometime after 1982.

There may have been other players in the early to mid 80s, but I do know that I saw Don Downs with Woody during my senior year of high school, which was 84-85. He was also on the PBS special with...

Sometime in the early 80's, I caught a double bill concert at Pier Six in Baltimore with Maynard and Woody. Woody played first with his band. Maynard then came out and was backed by the band. I'm not...

Frank, I do not remember the Woody/Maynard concert, but I do remember one you and Pete and I attended where he did the handkerchief trick to start Give It One, down at Pier Six, in the mid '80's. I...

No problem Frank. ;-) After all, it WAS over twenty years ago... I'm leaving the country tomorrow for a few weeks. I'll holler at all of you when I get home! Enjoy the rest of the month everyone. Roger

Didn't Howie Shear play the book in about 1980? He's one of the best players no one knows about.

You got that right DB. I used to catch Howie in the valley playing with either Les Hooper or Ollie Mitchell. One of those bands had a fun arrangement of In The Mood with Howie soloing and picking of...

I hadn't thought about this thread in a long time. I did however see Mike Brignola (not Nick) play recently in his Miami Sax Quartet in the Fall. That is a rocking group, although it lacks a trumpet...
